Pete Rock Believes that He and CL Smooth ‘Should Still Be a Duo’

Rock expressed his disappointment with the current state of his creative relationship with Smooth, noting that things should have panned out differently for the acclaimed duo. “It should never be like this, ever,” Rock lamented, alluding to undisclosed issues that led to their split. While he refrained from divulging specifics, he expressed well wishes for Smooth and hinted at a desire for a reconciliation in the future.

Despite their split in 1995, the duo’s debut EP, All Souled Out, released in 1991 remains a classic in the hip-hop landscape. Rock and Smooth briefly reunited in 2010 but failed to materialize a new album despite public discussions. The lack of acknowledgment of their release anniversaries adds to Rock’s disappointment, as he longs for mature conversations and healing between the two artists.

In a recent Instagram post, Rock, who collaborated with Common on the track “Wise Up,” further emphasized his stance against drama and airing out grievances in public. He hopes for growth and resolution in his relationship with Smooth and is open to potential future collaborations. Rock’s maturity and growth reflect his current position and readiness for reconciliation should the opportunity arise.
