Mustard recently shared that it only took him 30 minutes to create the beat for Kendrick Lamar’s diss track “Not Like Us,” inspired by Dr. Dre and Lil Jon. In a Billboard interview, Mustard revealed that he did not sample Nas’ “Ether” and did not hear the full version of the song before anyone else.
Reflecting on his inspiration, Mustard wondered what a collaboration between Dr. Dre and Lil Jon would sound like, which influenced the creation of the infectious beat in a mere half hour. “When I was making it, in the back of my head is ‘What would Dr. Dre do if Lil Jon was in the studio and they was collaborating on the beat. That was my thought process,” Mustard explained.
