In an unsurprising turn of events, some listeners quickly assumed the lines above were a diss aimed at Kendrick and other named artists. However, a basic understanding of the lyrics reveals that they are actually delivered from the perspective of a hater, not Eminem himself.
Ahead of the release of his album “The Death of Slim Shady,” Eminem addressed potential misinterpretations and encouraged listeners to experience the album as a cohesive piece rather than picking it apart.
While the highlights in this album are not meant as disses, Eminem, often in character as Slim Shady, does take aim (or similar lines) at various public figures such as Caitlyn Jenner and Diddy. In the “Guilty Conscience” sequel, Eminem takes a more apologetic approach in a lyrical argument with Slim, referencing past conflicts with Machine Gun Kelly, Will Smith, and Limp Bizkit.
Coincidentally, Fred Durst of Limp Bizkit released new music on the same day. Durst makes a notable appearance on Hardy’s “SOUL4SALE,” a track from the artist’s latest album “QUIT!!.” Earlier this year, Hardy put his own twist on Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg’s “Gin and Juice” song at their request.
