Lupe Fiasco recently shared plans to revive the Child Rebel Soldier collective, but with a twist that may surprise fans. In a recent interview with Stereogum, Lupe discussed the group’s origins, which included himself, Pharrell Williams, and Kanye West. He revealed that the idea for the group stemmed from his desire to rap over Radiohead beats, a concept that captured the attention of Kanye and Pharrell.
Although the group only released a few songs together, such as “Us (Placers),” “Don’t Stop!,” and “Everybody Noze (Remix),” Lupe is now looking to bring Child Rebel Soldier back as a solo project. He expressed his intention to return to the original energy of the group, with him rapping over Radiohead beats. Tyler, The Creator already has a record from this new iteration of the group, indicating a promising future for the collective.
“I’m gonna reboot CRS in the next six months, maybe next year,” Fiasco revealed. “But it’s gonna go back to the original energy, which was me rapping over Radiohead beats.” He emphasized his commitment to creating music that captures the essence of the original group, drawing inspiration from Radiohead’s unique sound.
Despite previous setbacks, including plans for a full-length album being shelved and an announcement in 2013 that the group’s future was uncertain, Lupe remains determined to revive Child Rebel Soldier. His passion for the project and dedication to creating innovative music sets the stage for an exciting chapter in the group’s evolution.
