Metamorphosis of Maina Doe: A Complex Journey

Maina Doe’s journey as a musician began long before the world heard her music. Growing up in Badung, Indonesia, she felt stifled by her environment and unable to fully express herself. Moving to Australia at seven years old allowed Maina to explore her creativity, leading her to start writing songs at the age of 13 and immerse herself in Sydney’s jazz and R&B scenes.

Working as a session and backup vocalist and writer, Maina developed a comfort in the music-making process, which she attributes to her success today. Despite setbacks caused by the pandemic after releasing singles like “Delusions” and “Unwritten Laws,” Maina took the time to recalibrate and grow, setting the stage for the release of her debut EP, ODIWAMS (One Day It Will All Make Sense).

With a wide range of influences, including Dijon, MIKE, and Cleo Sol, Maina’s EP promises to strike a balance between gritty and polished, reflecting her growth and resolve as an artist. A new campaign with JD Sports x The North Face and the upcoming release of ODIWAMS show Maina’s dedication to her craft.

In a recent interview with Complex AU, Maina discusses her journey as an artist, the evolution of her sound, and ways to overcome stage fright. Her decision to pursue music seriously developed gradually, starting from her love for music and experiences in the music industry in Sydney. Meeting her manager unexpectedly while working at a restaurant pushed Maina towards fully embracing her role as an artist.

Now, as Maina prepares to share her music with the world, her journey of evolution and growth shines through in every note and lyric.
