Interview with Skaiwater: The Reason Your Favorite Rappers are Fans of this Up-and-Coming Artist

Growing up, I found that my parents were the biggest influences in my life, more so than my surroundings in the UK or the internet. They were cautious about me spending too much time online, but eventually, they trusted that my surroundings were beneficial for me. It was a combination of my parents’ guidance and the internet that shaped me into the artist I am today.

Reflecting on my journey, I feel like I truly found my voice as an artist towards the end of 2021. I shifted from creating music that catered to what I thought people wanted to hear, to creating music that surprised and satisfied me. This shift allowed me to express myself authentically, without worrying about how my art would be perceived.

When I create music, my focus is always on evoking emotion. I strive to connect with my audience on an emotional level, using a mix of emotive lyrics and vibrant production. While some may label my music as sad with an uptempo twist, I prefer not to categorize it and let the listeners interpret it in their own way.

Evolution is key to standing out as an artist. I believe in constantly evolving and embracing change in my craft. People may resist change, but they also crave novelty. By radiating change and growth, I aim to stay fresh and engaging in the ever-evolving music industry.

My journey into music production began at a young age when my dad introduced me to music software. Over the years, I honed my skills and eventually started producing my own beats. I prefer creating my own beats as it allows me complete creative control and provides a more authentic expression of my artistry.

While producing music independently may not be for everyone, it serves a unique purpose for me. I believe that every artist has their own approach to music, and my method resonates with a different audience. Each artist serves a specific purpose in the industry, catering to the diverse needs of listeners.

Although I have dabbled in producing for other artists, I prefer to focus on solidifying my own music before extending my energy to collaborations. However, a dream collaboration for me would be working with Beyoncé, whom I admire for her dedication to her craft and the thoughtfulness she puts into her music.

The music industry is evolving, with artists becoming more self-sufficient while also fostering a sense of community for collaboration. Accessibility to music production tools has made it easier for emerging artists to create and share their work. This evolution is natural and inevitable, as seen in the recording processes of artists like Bryson Tiller and Billie Eilish, who have achieved success through their DIY approaches.

Transitioning from recording music in my room to a professional studio was a learning experience. While recording alone allowed me creative freedom, working in a studio with others offered different benefits. Both environments have their advantages, and I see them as complementary options in my creative process.
