Missy Elliott’s Hit Song “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)” Makes History as First Hip-Hop Track Broadcasted into Space

Brittany Brown from NASA’s Office of Communications in Washington emphasized the parallel between space exploration and Missy Elliott’s art. She highlighted Missy’s tendency to incorporate space-centric themes and futuristic visuals into her music videos, making a collaboration with NASA a perfect fit. Brown played a key role in proposing collaborative ideas to Elliott’s team, which eventually led to this exciting partnership.

The collaboration comes at a significant time, coinciding with NASA’s upcoming missions to Venus, known as DAVINCI and VERITAS. These missions, scheduled to launch between 2029 and 2031, will focus on exploring the planet and transmitting valuable data back to Earth. The Deep Space Network (DSN), established in 1963, will support these missions by providing ground stations in Goldstone, California, Madrid, Spain, and Canberra, Australia.

Despite the cosmic connection, fans eager to witness Missy Elliott’s stellar performances do not need to venture into space. The rapper kicked off her Out of This World Tour on July 4 in Vancouver, featuring special guests Ciara, Busta Rhymes, and Timbaland. The tour, spanning 24 cities including Houston, Atlanta, New York, and Chicago, promises an unforgettable experience for attendees before concluding on August 23.
